LEARNING OUTCOME
Epic is thrilled to partner with the Scripps National Spelling Bee platform again next year. By inspiring the exploration of words, the Scripps National Spelling Bee illuminates pathways to lifelong curiosity, celebrates academic achievement and enriches communities. All Epic students in grades 3-8 are invited to participate!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Epic is registered with the Scripps National Spelling Bee platform, and this comes with some important information regarding registration for your student. Epic will host two separate spelling bees, one in the Oklahoma City area and one in the Tulsa area. One winner will arise from each of these areas to move on to the Oklahoma regional spelling bees. Students who participate in the Epic Oklahoma City area spelling bee must live in specific counties. Students who participate in the Epic Tulsa area spelling bee must live in other specific counties.
Please look at the attached map to ensure your student is registered for the appropriate Epic Spelling Bee according to where you currently live.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. How can my student prepare for the spelling bee?
There is a word list for each grade level that students should study prior to the event. Once a student has registered using the links above, a confirmation email will be sent that contains links to word lists for all grade levels. Scripps also has apps available for Apple and Android users that can be found below. NOTE: It’s best practice to study your grade-level words along with the grade level above yours. If your grade-level competition continues beyond your grade-level words, the next grade-level words will be used. For example, a 3rd grader should study both 3rd -and 4th-grade words. It is a good idea for each student to be familiar with every word on each grade level list.

2. What happens if my student misses the first word in the competition?
Unfortunately, even if a student misses the first word in their round, they will be eliminated from the competition.
3. Will there be any words given during the competition that aren’t on the grade-level study list?
Yes. The study lists are meant to be a starting point and do not contain every word that will be given during the competition. The WORD CLUB app is a great way to take your Spelling Bee study sessions to the next level.

The best part of the Living Wax Museum is that you get to learn by doing. You’ll get to research a famous person, create a costume and perform as if you were that person. The most important thing is to enjoy learning and sharing what you found out. We’ve made a step-by-step guide to help you through your project, from choosing a person to practicing your performance.

INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC COMPETITION
JANUARY 1-FEBRUARY 1
LEARNING OUTCOME
The International Academic Competitions provide students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in Geography, History and Science, while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
This competitive event allows students to engage with international academic standards, build confidence and cultivate resilience in a dynamic, supportive setting that celebrates subject-specific mastery and overall academic growth.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The official study guides for the 2024-2025 International Academic Competitions are not yet available. Additionally, the cost of entry for the competitions has not been announced. Please check back frequently, as this guide will be updated with links to the study guides, entry fee information and additional preparation resources as soon as they are released by the competition organizers.
HOW TO COMPETE:
Epic is participating in the 2024-2025 International Academic Competitions. There will be an option for: a Geography Bee, a History Bee and a Science Bee. There are online free regional qualifying exams that will all take place online Jan. 1 - Feb. 1, 2025. This is for students in grades 1 -8. To participate in the qualifying exams, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Decide which test or tests your student would like to take.
Step 2: Begin studying. They can begin by utilizing the study guides at the bottom of this page that correspond with their grade level to prepare for their test(s). They can use both color sets per subject. The more information they study, the better!
Step 3: Take the test(s) between Jan. 1 - Feb. 1, 2025 online at home. “Create New Account” and fill in the information.

Step 4: Be sure to write down your student’s Player ID and save it for future use or if they decide to come back and take the tests at separate times.
Step 5: Ready to test? When your students have finished preparing, click on your desired exam. All exams are timed at 20 minutes and contain 50 multiple-choice questions. Encourage your student to take a guess even if they do not know the answer.

Reading Corner – You’ll meet some special friends and listen as they read books to our students in a cozy reading corner. The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!
Book Walk – Use your mind and your muscles as you read your way to a healthier you! Read to go and go to read, participate at each station and fill your passport with speed. Epic students will receive a FREE T-shirt for participating in the Book Walk. (While supplies last.) So be sure when you step, step with care and great tact. And remember that life is a great balancing act.
Book Giveaway – Stop by our book giveaway and grab your reading certificate for being an excellent reader! Oh, the things you can find if you don’t stay behind!
Resource Fair – Connect with Community Resources for your family and students and visit Epic Literacy Vendors. Hop into our community care closet and find many things to meet your families needs. You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut!
Come celebrate Read Across America Week at an Epic Literacy Event, fun for the whole family!
This will be an event where Epic families can celebrate the joy of reading with our staff, teachers, and a few surprise visitors. But that is not all. Oh, no. That is not all! The day will be full of zizzer-zazzer-zuzz and gluppity-glup, and a whole host of other collywobble activities. Read on to find out what to expect at this event. Because these things are fun and fun is good!

Read Across America helps to promote literacy, encourage a love of reading and build community among children and families. All you need to do is register for the event and show up. We will take it from there!

Imagine Oklahoma’s coolest authors coming right onto your computer screen to share their writing secrets. In these super-fun online sessions, you’ll learn how they create amazing stories and get tips to make your own writing awesome.
If you love writing or reading, this workshop is for you. It’s like a field trip into the world of your favorite books! Get ready to meet the authors and learn how you could become one too.

PRESENTING AUTHORS
9/25 Darleen Bailey Beard – On Sept. 25, join Darleen Bailey Beard, award-winning author of “The Babbs Switch Story,” “Annie Glover is Not a Tree Lover” and “Twister.” In Darleen’s workshop, called The Recipe for a Successful Story, you will learn the basic “ingredients” of a delicious story and write your very own recipe to turn into your story.
11/7 Alton Carter – On Nov. 7, join Alton Carter, a former foster child and police officer. He was the first person in his family to graduate from high school and college. In this virtual session, he will speak to students about how he overcame his circumstances to become the person he is today. He will introduce students to his book “The Boy Who Carried Bricks” and the processes behind making that a best selling novel.
