Sessions begin Jan. 27
Epic Charter Schools today announced it was selected by the Health Career Collaborative (HCC) for a pilot program to help guide the school’s nearly 7,000 Native American students into careers in medicine, sciences and related fields.
Founded in 2008, the HCC is a national nonprofit organization with chapters in 33 cities in the U.S. that supports high school students from underrepresented groups to consider health careers.
The goals of the Indigenous Health Career Collaborative pilot program are to increase Native representation in medicine, sciences and related fields, to expose Native high school students to various related fields and to support students who are interested in health and sciences related fields.
The IHCC will provide students with mentors who are Native medical students, offer conversations and career panels with Native leaders who are medical doctors, veterinarians, dentists, scientists, nurses and other health care professionals, and will include presentations and discussion about health topics, particularly those relevant to Indigenous peoples.
Participation in the IHCC will be via Zoom on Mondays at 4:30 p.m. starting Monday, Jan. 27. There will be a total of 11 sessions including four career panels, six sessions with medical student mentors and a finale event.
The program is open to any high school student (grades 9-12) who identifies as Indigenous or Native.
