As a former basketball coach, I know firsthand the benefits extracurricular activities can have on student growth, development and success. The bonds that are formed by being on a team can last a lifetime, not to mention learning teamwork, overcoming loss and winning with grace. These skills shape how students interact with each other and can help shape well-adjusted and successful adults.
With the 2024-25 school year almost upon us, this is an appropriate time to talk about the special relationship between extracurricular activities and student success. There is overwhelming data that suggests students who engage in extracurricular activities are more likely to succeed academically. Generally speaking, students who engage in school sports, clubs, academic competitions are more likely to do better in school, learn conflict-resolution skills and are more likely to avoid behavioral problems.
Since Epic is a mostly virtual experience, connecting with various clubs and organizations is more deliberate than in a traditional school. Epic offers a vast array of choices for students to have shared experiences through school activities. Our many social, cultural, academic and competitive groups have plenty to offer when it comes to keeping our students active and growing. After all, school isn’t just about grades and test scores. It’s also about having fun and making new friends. Further, Epic has many student enrichment opportunities that focus on science, math, history.
To find out more about what Epic has to offer beyond the classroom, visit the Student Life section of epiccharterschools.org and by checking out this month’s back-to-school issue of The Orbit or the Student Life section of epiccharterschools.org. I encourage you to work with your students to find what interests them and get them involved.
As always, thank you for choosing Epic and have a great 2024-25 school year!
Until next time,
Bart
