In elementary school, Brody was scraping by with a C and D average. “My son struggled in [traditional] public school pretty much from day one,” his mother Jami said. She saw the intelligence and potential Brody possessed, but was told that he would “always be a ‘C’ student.”

By the time Brody reached middle school, Jami could see his confidence dwindling.

“I could tell he was slipping into a depression.” While her other son was succeeding in a brick-and-mortar school, Jami could see that it wasn’t the right fit for Brody.

“I think we need to know our children well enough to see the difference between normal school stress and something that’s much bigger,” she said. Brody didn’t have the words to tell her he was struggling, but she could “see it everyday in his eyes.”

Then, in September 2017, Jami heard about EPIC Charter schools and enrolled Brody. He finished seventh grade that December, earning a 4.0 GPA. He was asked to join the National Junior Honor Society.

“I can’t put into words how proud I was and how much better he felt about himself…I think EPIC saved my son’s life,” she said.

Jami said EPIC helped Brody reach his potential academically and find his self-confidence.

“He didn’t look lost or empty anymore. He started having a sparkle again.”

Brody is starting high school this year and continues to be on the honor roll.

“I will forever be grateful for EPIC,” Jami said.
